Snow guards and ice dams on Ontario metal roofs

A metal roof sheds snow in slabs — which is a feature over a field and a hazard over your front door. How to place snow retention properly, and why metal fixes ice damming.

Two winter questions come up on nearly every Ontario metal roofing quote: will the snow slide off, and will I still get ice dams?

The answers are “yes, all at once” and “much less, if the assembly is right.”

Snow release is real, and it is sudden

Asphalt shingles are rough. Snow grips them and melts off gradually.

Metal is smooth. Snow sits until a thin melt layer forms at the panel surface — usually from solar gain or heat loss from below — and then the entire slab releases at once. On a steep roof it can come off in a single mass, without warning, from the full height of the roof.

In an open field that is exactly what you want: the roof unloads itself, the structure never carries a sustained load, and there is no eave-line melt-refreeze cycle.

Over a front door it is a serious hazard. We have seen released snow take out a porch rail, flatten a heat pump, bury a car to the window line, and — the one that stays with you — come off onto a driveway a few seconds after someone had walked it.

Snow retention should be mapped, not blanketed

The single most common mistake is treating snow guards as a product you buy by the roof rather than a detail you place by the risk.

Retention belongs where release causes a problem:

  • Above entries, doors and porches
  • Above decks, patios and hot tubs
  • Above walkways and driveways
  • Above parking, propane tanks, heat pumps, AC condensers and generators
  • Above lower roof sections that would take the impact
  • At property lines where snow would land on a neighbour’s side

Retention is unnecessary — and counterproductive — where release is harmless:

  • Rear elevations discharging onto open lawn
  • Roof planes over garden beds or bush
  • Anywhere nobody walks and nothing is stored

Why counterproductive? Because retention does exactly what it says: it holds snow on the roof. That is sustained load your structure now carries all winter, and a persistent snowpack at the eaves is what drives ice damming in the first place. Blanketing an entire roof in guards can create the problem you switched to metal to escape.

If a quote shows continuous snow guards across every plane, ask which risk each run is addressing. There should be an answer for each one.

Types of retention

Seam-mounted clamps are the right answer on standing seam. They clamp to the seam with setscrews — no penetration of the panel. This is a genuine advantage of standing seam over other metal systems: retention can be added, moved or increased later without ever putting a hole in the roof.

Never accept snow guards that are screwed or glued through a standing seam panel. Adhesive-mounted guards exist for other systems; on a seamed roof they are the wrong product and they leave you with a bonded patch that fails eventually.

Bar systems — one or two continuous rails on seam clamps — hold the most and are what we specify above entries and high-consequence areas.

Individual pad or fence guards in a staggered pattern suit moderate-risk areas and lighter loads.

Placement is usually a run set back from the eave rather than right at it, so the retained mass bears over structure rather than over the overhang. On tall or steep roofs, a second run higher up the slope prevents the lower run from taking the entire load at once.

Ice dams: what they actually are

An ice dam forms when the upper roof is warm enough to melt snow while the eave is cold enough to refreeze it. Water runs down, hits the cold overhang beyond the heated envelope, and freezes. That ridge of ice grows, and subsequent meltwater pools behind it.

The heat comes from inside the house: insufficient attic insulation, air leakage around light fixtures and bathroom fans, poorly sealed attic hatches, or ductwork in the attic.

Ice damming is an insulation and ventilation problem that presents as a roofing problem. Any roofer who tells you a new covering alone will fix it is either not paying attention or not telling you the truth.

Why metal helps anyway

Even though the root cause is thermal, metal genuinely reduces the damage:

No horizontal laps to back up under. Shingles are overlapping courses that assume water always moves downhill. When a dam forces water to sit and back up, it goes under the courses. A standing seam panel is continuous ridge to eave with no lap to exploit.

It sheds before dams get established. Less snow held at the eave means less mass available to melt and refreeze.

Ventilated cavity. Our Gold package straps over the deck, creating an air gap under the panel. The metal runs closer to outdoor ambient, which reduces the melt that feeds the dam. This is the part that addresses cause rather than symptom.

Extended ice-and-water shield. We run high-temperature membrane well past code minimum at eaves and valleys. Code minimums assume the melt line sits where an average roof puts it; on a shaded Huntsville or Muskoka roof it sits further up the slope.

The complete fix

If you have had ice dams, the right sequence is:

  1. Air-seal the attic floor. Every penetration — fixtures, fans, plumbing stacks, the hatch. This is the highest-value step and the most commonly skipped.
  2. Bring insulation up to depth, and keep it out of the soffit intake vents.
  3. Verify balanced ventilation — adequate soffit intake and ridge exhaust, actually connected, actually unblocked.
  4. Then install a roof assembly that does not care: strapped standing seam with extended membrane at the eaves.

Do only step 4 and you will get a better outcome, but not a solved problem. Do all four and the problem goes away.
