How to Choose a Metal Roofer in Central Ontario
A buyer's guide for Barrie, Simcoe, Muskoka, York Region and Georgian Bay: what to ask a metal roofer, what to get in writing, and the red flags to walk away from.
Service area
Metal roofing in Aurora usually means one of three houses: a Victorian or Edwardian home in the old town around Yonge and Wellington, a 1970s to 1990s family house in Aurora Heights, Aurora Highlands or the Hills of St. Andrew, or a large newer build in the Bayview subdivisions and the estate lots on the Oak Ridges Moraine. CGD Roofing installs 1" mechanical lock standing seam on all three, forming each panel on site at the full length of the slope.
Coverage: Under an hour south of our Barrie shop, down Highway 400 or the 404 depending on which side of town you are on.
The short answer
Aurora is under an hour from the CGD Roofing shop in Barrie, via Highway 400 or the 404, and we install metal roofing across the town. We put 1" mechanical lock standing seam on heritage homes in Northeast Old Aurora, family homes in the established neighbourhoods, and large estate roofs on the Oak Ridges Moraine. Houses in the heritage district need the Town's heritage staff to see the proposal before material is ordered.
Northeast Old Aurora is a designated Heritage Conservation District, so before a roof on one of those streets changes material or colour, the Town's heritage planning staff will want to see what is proposed. Metal roofing has a long history on period buildings, and a narrow panel with low ribs reads correctly on them, but we would rather you have that conversation with the Town before the coil is ordered than after. The same applies to any individually designated house elsewhere in Aurora.
Roof size climbs on the edges of town. Estate homes in Aurora Estates and on the rural moraine lots have big hip roofs, tall ridges and long eaves, often on open ground where wind crosses the fields with little to slow it. Those are the roofs where a full-length panel matters most, and where we tighten clip spacing at the perimeter rather than relying on a default layout. Some of the newer enclaves also have design rules on exterior colour, so check yours early.
A metal roof is not one product. These are the conditions that change the assembly here.
Profile, panel width and colour are the three things a heritage reviewer looks at. We default to a 16" panel with low ribs on period houses, bring physical samples in muted colours, and write the specification so it can go straight into the Town's review.
Aurora Highlands and the Hills of St. Andrew have large lots under large trees. Shaded north slopes hold ice longer, and leaves and needles pile up in the valleys. A smooth standing seam panel sheds debris better than a granular shingle, and every valley is lined with ice and water shield before the metal goes on.
Open lots on the Oak Ridges Moraine take wind that sheltered town lots never see. On those roofs we specify 24 gauge with double-lock 180° seams and close up clip spacing at the rakes, ridges and eaves, the three zones where uplift is highest.
Standing seam installation, metal roof repairs, custom fabrication and roof inspections throughout Aurora and surrounding areas.
Three levels of assembly, quoted the same way everywhere we work, from a measured survey, never a rate card. What moves a quote is your roof, not your postcode.
Direct installation
Panels formed on site and installed over sound existing roof boards. The straightforward option when the structure underneath is already in good shape.
Best for: Sound decks, simple rooflines, budget-led projects
Quote the Silver systemStrapped & ventilated
Adds a strapped substrate that creates a ventilated cavity under the panel, the assembly that actually addresses ice damming rather than hiding it.
Best for: Most Ontario homes. The one we would put on our own houses
Quote the Gold systemArchitectural grade
Full architectural detailing in 24 gauge with a PVDF finish. For heritage homes, custom builds, and anything where the roof is a design element.
Best for: Chalets, heritage homes, complex or highly visible rooflines
Quote the Platinum systemEvery project is quoted from a site visit or drone survey, roof complexity, tear-off versus overlay, gauge, finish and access all move the number, and none of them can be assessed from a postcode.
Very likely. The district is protected under the Ontario Heritage Act, and changes to a roof's material or colour there are normally reviewed by the Town's heritage planning staff. Call them before you commit. We will provide a written specification and samples for the review, and we will not order material until you have an answer.
Usually a better one than shingles. Standing seam has no granules to wash off and no tabs for debris to lodge under, so leaves and needles slide off rather than rot in place. Valleys still need attention: clear them in the fall, and expect us to line them with ice and water shield.
Yes. Big hip roofs are where on-site forming earns its keep, since every panel is cut to the exact length of its slope with no laps. The price is driven by roof complexity, the number of valleys and hips, access and gauge, so we measure before we quote.

Two metal roof quotes can differ by thousands and describe different roofs. Read them line by line, put them on the same roof area and scope, then compare.

Both are metal roofing and both outlast asphalt. One is a continuous panel, the other hundreds of interlocking pieces. How each handles Ontario snow, slope and looks.
