Standing seam: durability and style
Standing seam is the rare roofing choice where the best-looking option is also the longest-lasting. Panel widths, seam profiles, colours and finishes that hold up in Ontario.

Most building decisions are trade-offs between how something looks and how long it lasts. Roofing usually is too.
Standing seam is one of the few exceptions. The features that make it durable — continuous panels, concealed fastening, folded seams — are the same features that give it its look. There is no aesthetic penalty for the engineering, and no engineering penalty for the aesthetics.
Where the look comes from
Three things create the standing seam appearance:
The vertical line. Panels run unbroken from ridge to eave. When formed on site to the exact slope length, there is no horizontal break anywhere on the plane — just clean parallel lines from top to bottom. Factory-length panels lapped part-way up the roof break that line, and once you have noticed it you cannot unsee it.
The seam shadow. A 1” raised seam casts a defined shadow that shifts through the day. It is what gives a metal roof depth rather than reading as a flat sheet.
The absence of fasteners. Nothing interrupts the field of the panel. An exposed-fastener roof has thousands of visible screw heads in regular rows, which reads — accurately — as agricultural.
Panel width changes everything
The most under-discussed design decision, and the one that most often goes wrong.
16” is our standard. It suits most residential architecture: seams close enough together to give rhythm and scale, wide enough that the roof does not read as busy.
Narrower (12–14”) suits heritage and Victorian homes. Folded metal roofing predates asphalt shingles considerably, and historically it was narrow. On a turret or a steep Victorian pitch in Orillia or Owen Sound, a narrow panel reads correctly where a wide one looks anachronistic.
Wider (18–20”) suits large contemporary planes and commercial work, and it is cheaper per square foot because there are fewer panels and fewer seams. The trade-off is real: wider pans show more oil-canning, so wide panels want heavier gauge and bead ribs.
We form to width on site, so this is an actual choice rather than whatever the supplier stocks.
Seam profile
Single-lock 90° gives a crisp, slightly softer line. Good on steeper roofs, siding and accent walls.
Double-lock 180° wraps the seam fully closed. Slightly more pronounced visually, and required on low slopes and wind-exposed elevations.
On most residential roofs the visual difference is subtle. Specify by pitch and exposure, not by appearance.
Bead ribs and striations
Small ribs rolled into the flat of the pan. They are primarily a flatness feature — the most effective single measure against oil-canning — but they also change how the roof reads, adding fine texture that catches light differently from a plain pan.
On a wide, dark, glossy panel we would specify them without hesitation. On a narrow matte panel they are optional.
Colour: what holds up in Ontario

Colour choice and finish choice are separate decisions, and the finish matters more.
PVDF (Kynar 500) holds colour and gloss dramatically longer than SMP polyester. On dark colours, on south-facing or snow-reflected elevations, or on anything lakeside, it is the correct specification. Manufacturers commonly warrant chalk and fade for 30–40 years.
SMP is good value on lighter colours and shaded roofs, where the UV loading is gentler.
What is currently specified most in our area:
- Matte black and charcoal dominate contemporary builds through Collingwood, the Blue Mountains and King. They look superb and they are the most demanding colours on a paint system — take the PVDF.
- Dark bronze and weathered browns suit cottage and timber-frame architecture, and read well against granite and pine.
- Deep greens on older cottages and heritage homes.
- Galvalume and light greys on agricultural and contemporary-industrial builds. The most forgiving colours for showing oil-canning and fade.
Two pieces of practical advice. Look at a physical sample outdoors, on site, on the elevation it will go on — screen colour and steel colour are not the same thing, and neither is a sample under showroom lighting. And remember that a colour reads darker on a large roof than it does on a 4” chip.
Beyond the roof
The same panel makes excellent siding, and matching a wall detail to a roof exactly — same coil, same run, same day — is something only on-site forming makes straightforward.
Regular applications: gable feature panels, entry canopies, dormer wraps, accent walls, and full elevations on contemporary builds. Standing seam run horizontally as siding is a distinctly modern look and is increasingly specified on custom builds through York Region and the escarpment.
Details that separate good from ordinary
The roof plane is easy. The details are what people actually see from the ground:
- Hemmed eaves and rakes — cut edges folded rather than exposed. Cleaner line, better edge protection.
- Custom chimney caps rather than stock covers bridged over a stack.
- Box eavestrough in matching material, which reads as part of the building rather than bolted to it.
- Concealed-fastener trim at every transition. Visible screws in the flashing undo the entire look of a concealed-fastener roof.
- Consistent seam alignment across roof planes, so seams line up where planes meet at a ridge or hip.
None of these cost much. All of them are the difference between a metal roof and a good metal roof.
