24 vs 26 gauge standing seam steel
24 gauge steel is thicker, stiffer and resists oil-canning better. 26 gauge costs less and is genuinely fine on some roofs. Here is how to tell which one yours is.

Gauge is counter-intuitive: the lower number is the thicker steel. 24 gauge is roughly 0.024 inches thick; 26 gauge is roughly 0.018. That sounds like a trivial difference. In practice it changes how the roof looks, how it behaves under load, and how it ages.
We offer both, and we do not think one is universally correct.
What the extra thickness actually does
Stiffness, and therefore flatness
The biggest visible difference is oil-canning — the gentle waviness you sometimes see in the flat part of a metal panel, most noticeable in raking light.
Oil-canning is inherent to light-gauge metal. It is not a defect, it is not a warranty item, and no honest roofer will promise you zero. But it is dramatically influenced by stiffness, and 24 gauge is meaningfully stiffer. On a wide, flat, dark, glossy panel in afternoon sun, the difference between 24 and 26 is obvious from the street.
Other things that reduce it, in rough order of effectiveness:
- Bead ribs or striations in the pan — the single most effective fix
- Heavier gauge
- Narrower panel width — 16” reads flatter than 18”
- A flat, true deck — panels telegraph what is under them
- Matte rather than gloss finish
- Lighter rather than darker colour
If flatness matters to you, combine 24 gauge with bead ribs and a matte finish. That combination is about as good as light-gauge steel gets.
Foot traffic and impact
24 gauge takes a boot better. This matters more than people expect — over a 50-year life, someone will be up there for a chimney, a satellite dish, solar, or an inspection.
It also handles hail better. Ontario hail rarely damages 24 gauge cosmetically. 26 gauge is more susceptible on the flat of the pan.
Wind uplift
Heavier gauge contributes to a higher uplift rating, though clip spacing and seam type matter more. On exposed shoreline or escarpment sites we specify 24 gauge as a matter of course, alongside double-lock seams and tightened perimeter clips.
Longevity — mostly a myth
Here is where the sales pitch usually overreaches. Gauge is not the primary driver of how long the steel lasts. What kills steel is corrosion, and corrosion is governed by the metallic coating (galvanized or Galvalume) and the paint system — not by thickness.
A 26 gauge panel with a good Galvalume substrate and a PVDF finish will outlast a 24 gauge panel with a cheap coating. Choose 24 gauge for rigidity, appearance and impact resistance. Choose the coating and paint for longevity. They are different decisions.
Cost
24 gauge carries a modest uplift over 26 — a small single-digit percentage of a typical re-roof total. On a prominent roof it is the last upgrade we would suggest cutting.
How to decide
Choose 24 gauge when:
- The roof is prominent — front elevation, low-pitch and visible from the road, or the main design feature
- The colour is dark or the finish is glossy
- Panel runs are long (over ~25 feet)
- The site is wind-exposed — shoreline, escarpment, open field
- The pitch is shallow enough that you look across the pan rather than at it
- You expect foot traffic
- It is an architectural or heritage project
26 gauge is genuinely fine when:
- The roof is simple and not especially visible
- Runs are short — dormers, porches, additions, garages
- The colour is light or the finish matte
- Budget is the governing constraint and the alternative is dropping to exposed-fastener metal
That last point is worth repeating. 26 gauge standing seam is a better roof than 24 gauge screw-down. If money is tight, trim the gauge before you give up the concealed-fastener system.
What we usually specify
For most Ontario homes: 24 gauge with a PVDF finish and bead ribs. It is not the cheapest option, and it is the one we would put on our own houses.
For garages, additions, porch roofs and outbuildings attached to a home: 26 gauge, usually matching the main roof’s colour so it reads as one building.
